"Wrestlers Are Like Seagulls": From McMahon to McMahon By James J. Dillon with Scott Teal & Philip Varriale Published by Crowbar Press Released on June 1, 2005 360 Pages (Hardcover) Available in Hardcover |
J.J. Dillon may best be known for being the manager of the original Four Horseman, but he wore many other hats in his career. He ran a fan club, he started out as a wrestler while managing on the side, he booked territories, he worked as Vince McMahon's right-hand man, played the commissioner role for WCW while working in the office... There isn't anything short of running a company that James J. Dillon did not do.
Those reasons make J.J. Dillon's autobiography Wrestlers Are Like Seagulls a must-read for anyone interested in learning more about wrestling as a business. The title comes from a quote passed down from one McMahon to another, which you will have to read the book to find out. In his memoirs, Dillon shares many great stories about working in territories all across the United States, Canada and even abroad in countries like Japan, Australia and Germany. He offers in-depth breakdowns about working for Dusty Rhodes in the NWA as his assistant, Vince McMahon as a member of the WWF booking committee (perhaps the highlight of the book), Eric Bischoff during the rise and fall of WCW and what it was like to work with Vince Russo in WCW and TNA. There are few people who have worked in the industry for as long and for as many different people as J.J. Dillon. He looks at his memoirs as a piece of history that can be looked back upon by his children and for the most part comes across very humble and honest.
Wrestlers Are Like Seagulls was published by Crowbar Press - a small operation run by Scott Teal who has also put out books by Ole Anderson, Jody "The Assassin" Hamilton and Bruno Lauer (Harvey Wippleman). While there aren't colour photos like you find in a WWE-published book, you'll also find plenty of spelling and factual errors that you wouldn't expect from a book put out by a major publisher. Not here. The book is very well researched and the proofreader didn't fall asleep on the job. If you're interested in wrestling as a business as well as logical, detail-oriented old school wrestling booking, you will thoroughly enjoy Wrestlers Are Like Seagulls - a first-class product.
