Superstar Billy Graham is one of the most emulated wrestlers ever. Many of the biggest names since have borrowed from him, not the least of which being Hulk Hogan, Jesse Ventura and Triple H. It was this bodybuilder look combined with poetic interviews inspired by Muhammad Ali that took Superstar to the WWWF Championship in 1977. He held onto that title for nearly a year, which was unprecendented for a heel. He is still the longest reigning heel champion in WWE history. Despite being a heel, Superstar Billy Graham's colourful personality caused many fans to cheer him regardless.

Tangled Ropes is the story about how Graham was given the world when he won the title from Bruno Sammartino and how it was all taken away from him 296 days later when he lost the belt to Bob Backlund. He left the WWWF, went into deep depression and turned into an addict. He also had many physical problems which stemmed from his rampant steroid abuse. The book covers his return to the now-WWF as a martial artist vying for Backlund's championship and his mental state at the time, as well as the 1986 comeback which ended up being his swansong. Perhaps most importantly, he explains his rationale for attacking Vince McMahon and the WWF in 1992 on the Phil Donahue Show, which caused him to be blacklisted by the WWF/WWE for ten years.

Superstar Billy Graham comes off as very honest in Tangled Ropes. This is a WWE-published book, so one cannot expect 100% honesty as it pertains to WWE itself, however he doesn't seem to have any major agendas. He is a deeply religious man, but does not come off as if he is preaching to the reader. Tangled Ropes is one of the most overlooked autobiographies, at least of those published by WWE. As he has not been a television regular in twenty years, the book did not receive the amount of promotion it rightfully deserved.
