WWE has bought the rights to produce a movie based on John Capouya's book Gorgeous George: The Outrageous Bad-Boy Wrestler Who Created American Pop Culture.
Gorgeous George's story is about a journeyman wrestler who remade himself into a flamboyant heel character in the early days of television.
This is the first exception to the rule of WWE Studios not producing wrestling-related movies. The idea of producing a movie based on Gorgeous George reportedly came from Vince McMahon himself. Past WWE Studios films include See No Evil, The Marine, The Condemned, 12 Rounds and The Marine 2, with Knucklehead, Legendary, Big Red and Killing Karma yet to be released (or produced).
John Posey will write the screenplay. WWE Studios has committed to a 2011 start date.
