We have compiled a list of all of the planned upcoming wrestling book releases with pre-order links whenever possible. March 2, 2010: Drawing Heat Re-Released by Crowbar Press

Drawing Heat, which celebrates the Ontario wrestling scene of the early 1980s was first published in 1988. It has just been re-released in a new, improved version from Crowbar Press (which has published such books as J.J. Dillon's autobiography).

"I think it evoked what wrestling was all about, at some crucial period of time. And everybody that is my age, or maybe a little bit younger, or certainly older, remembers that as the golden age of wrestling. Its roots are there, I think. That what I had always figured," Freedman told SLAM! Wrestling.

There were a few wrestling books that were out of print that I felt needed to be re-released due to their importance," said Teal. "Drawing Heat was the one that first came to mind, so I thought it would be interesting to contact Jim Freedman, the author, to see if he would be interested. He was wholeheartedly behind the project. I also wanted to interview Jim to get his take on the process of writing the book, what kind of a reaction the book received (from both fans and wrestlers), and his reaction to the death of Dave McKigney."

This new release of Drawing Heat includes several new photos and features two additions:

* An interview with the author Jim Freedman from 2009.

* "The Final, Fateful Bearman Tour," the story about the final days and tragic death of Bearman McKigney, Adrian Adonis and Pat Kelly in July 1988. It includes interviews with several wrestlers who were on the tour at the time such as Phil Watson (the son of Whipper Watson), Hartford Love, Willie "Wolfman" Farkus, Rocky Della Serra, Ricky Johnson, Steve Ocean, and Sweet Daddy Siki.

Jim Ross recently posted a blog regarding wrestling books:

"We've been getting a good deal of emails on wrestling related books to read. I am a major proponent of reading all one can about the business and from a variety of vantage points and philosophies. For example, a friend who attended the Jack Brisco funeral services last week told me that he was reading Howard Brody's book entitled "Swimming with Piranhas" and was really enjoying it. I have the book but haven't started it yet but I will be getting to it sooner than later. If anyone out there has read Howard's book and wants to send us a book review, please feel free to do so.

Also, I suggest checking out the many books by Larry Matysik who was the voice of St. Louis Wrestling back in the heyday and promoter Sam Muchnick's right hand man. Larry's perspective on the business is more that of an educated and objective fan and not that of a disgruntled ex-wrestler who rants about how they were done wrong, got the shaft, and generally bemoans, "woe is me." Larry is objective, honest and always provides a great read.

I think that every young wrestler should be reading all that they can about the business and in organized settings they should be tested on such."

December 1, 2009: WWE Comic Book Series To Launch in 2010

Titan Publishing has announced its partnership with World Wrestling Entertainment in the launch of WWE Comics. Over the course of the agreement, 20 issues will be produced and distributed to comic retailers and specialty stores in the US and Canada. The comic’s flagship title will be WWE Heroes featuring WWE Superstars and Divas, with the first issue debuting on March 23, 2010.

The series will take the biggest WWE Superstars and Divas beyond the spotlight of the squared circle and into a brand new fictional universe.

“Each week more than 1.6 million teens watch WWE programming on television in the U.S. This is an important demographic for the comic book industry and vital for a successful launch in the industry,”
stated Ned Hartley, Editor, WWE Heroes. “We’ve got some truly amazing stories to tell – our first issue is going to blow you away! The “in- your-face, no-holds-barred” attitude of the WWE works so well as a comic, we just can’t wait for people to see the great surprises that we’ve got in store.”

WWE Heroes series features Superstars Triple H, Undertaker, Randy Orton, Batista, Shawn Michaels, Big Show, John Cena, CM Punk, Kane, Edge, Chris Jericho, Matt Hardy, Rowdy Roddy Piper, Carlito, Jim Ross, Jerry Lawler and Kelly Kelly. The WWE Heroes cycle is written by Keith Champagne, who has penned acclaimed comics such as Justice Society of America, Green Lantern Corps, World War III and Adolescent Radioactive Black Belt Hamsters.

Issue #1 reveals an eternal rivalry set against the backdrop of the history of WWE. Why is the ruthless Shadow King so obsessed with WWE? What is the reason for his eternal and supernatural war with the Firstborn? And could his ancient opponent really be a member of the WWE roster?

Artwork is provided by comics’ artist, Andy Smith, who has worked as a penciller for major comic publishers such as Marvel, DC, Image, Acclaim, and CrossGen Entertainment.

An alternate cover exclusive to comic stores of issue #1 features a specially-commissioned cover by comics’ artist Liam Sharp, who has worked on titles including Hulk, X-Men, Spider Man, Venom, Gears of War, Superman, Batman, and Spawn: The Dark Ages.

TNA's Mick Foley revealed the name of his new upcoming book in a new blog on his MySpace.

"As some of you know, I will have a new book coming out in early fall 2010, titled Countdown to Lockdown. The book is largely finished – I just have to write two last chapters in the next few weeks.

"I'm a pretty tough judge of my own work, but I am very happy with it, and believe that anyone who has enjoyed any of my earlier books, will enjoy this one as well. I will occasionally be posting sneak peaks at the book on my new TNA blog, in addition to some chapters that won’t be available in the book."

Bobby "The Brain" Heenan started out as a manager back in 1965. From there, he went on to manage many of the greats in the AWA, followed by his WWF years, before transitioning into a role as a colour commentator - or "broadcast journalist" - and eventually winding up in WCW until 2000 when he was thrown off the already sinking ship.

As you can expect, Bobby The Brain: Wrestling's Bad Boy Tells All is full of humour which is usually directed at some ham-n-egger or humanoid and almost never self-deprecating. Heenan doesn't write a lot about his pre-wrestling days. He doesn't skip over them, but he tells enough to get by. Infact, very little is covered in detail. All of a sudden you realize a couple pages ago, he was in the '60s and now he's almost in the '80s. His WWF managerial career is largely written about by the Wrestlemania - one paragraph per year. Heenan obviously did not keep a journal of any kind - few in the wrestling business did. That said, he does cover most of the bases. If he didn't include an event in his book, it must not have been significant to him.

Bobby The Brain: Wrestling's Bad Boy Tells All may not be the War and Peace of wrestling books, but it is a quick and fun read. Bobby has plenty of great Andre the Giant stories, funny midget stories, lots of ribs and much more. It also includes a rare foreword by Hulk Hogan. The majority of the book is very light in tone with a heart-warming story near the end, followed by Bobby Heenan getting the news of his cancer diagnosis (which he is still fighting at the time of this writing). Bobby The Brain: Wrestling's Bad Boy Tells All may not be a must-read for all wrestling fans, but if you're looking for an easy read, you won't be disappointed in reading it.

November 12, 2009: Rey Mysterio Speaks on New Autobiography Out Now

Rey Mysterio's new autobiography, Rey Mysterio: Behind the Mask, is officially released yesterday. Rey reveals in an interview with WWE.com that getting the book written was a challenge in itself. "When WWE came to me and said they wanted me to write the book, I said, 'Oh no, I'm not ready for that,'" explained Mysterio, shaking his head in disbelief. "It was more of a shock to me - I wasn't expecting it. I always planned to write something closer to the end of my career. But they kept persisting. "Once I began working on it, it immediately became very interesting for me," he recalled. "Everything just started flowing. It was really cool to reminisce, looking back at stories from day one all the way to the present, even stories from the age of 8 years old."

Bret "The Hitman" Hart is one of the biggest stars in the history of the wrestling business. He is also arguably one of the greatest wrestlers ever. One of twelve children of wrestler/promoter Stu Hart, he made his way from his father's promotion Stampede Wrestling all the way to top of the World Wrestling Federation. His relationship with the WWF ended with a bang in a rare double-cross that happened right infront of the viewing audience's eyes. There were many bumps and bruises inbetween, and even more afterward. Hitman: My Real Life in the Cartoon World of Wrestling is the much-anticipated telling of Bret's journey through his storied career.

Hart wrote the book over eight years, based off of audio diaries that he kept during his career. Because of this, he can write the precise thoughts he had at the time of the events. Coming in at nearly 600 pages, Hitman is by far the longest wrestling autobiography ever written. He addresses his family, drinking, drugs, affairs and life on the road and pulls no punches while doing so. You will not find a more honest wrestling autobiography. Bret writes in depth about every subject imaginable and leaves no stone left unturned. Bret presents his entire story from his point of view and how the reader judges him is not as important as getting his true story - both the good and bad - across.

There have been some great wrestling books written in the past ten years and Hitman: My Real Life in the Cartoon World of Wrestling ranks at the very top of that list. It's got triumph as such as when he won the WWF Championship, which he looks at as recognition of his talents rather than a prop given to an actor. It's got tragedy - the Hart family has seen more than its fair share of heartbreak, most notably Owen's tragic fall. It's got infidelity, which Bret gives his reasons for in the book. It's also got humour - not the same kind of humour as you'll find in a book by Mick Foley or Chris Jericho, but Bret isn't all serious all the time. All of these ingredients and many more are what make this book well worth the wait and a centerpiece for any wrestling book collection.

If you know your wrestling history, you know that Bruno Sammartino held the WWWF Championship from 1963 to 1971 and again from 1973 until 1977 and that he sold out Madison Square Garden an astounding 187 times. Unfortunately, many newer wrestling fans don't know much more than that about him. Sammartino grew up in a small Italian village ravaged by World War II. After the war, his family emigrated to the United States. From there, it would take a lot of hard work, but Bruno Sammartino would become one of the biggest stars wrestling has ever seen.

Bruno Sammartino: An Autobiography of Wrestling's Living Legend was originally published in 1990 and re-released in 2008, thus pre-dating the majority of the wrestling books on the market. It's filled with amazing stories about living through the war, being a sickly child, making it to the United States and growing up in Pittsburgh, weightlifting accomplishments, wrestling a monkey, starting out in wrestling and experiencing the politics, finally getting a chance with Frank Tunney in Toronto, how Vince McMahon Sr. took him back, winning the WWWF Championship and his career as a superstar as well as his retirement. Bruno is not known to be one to hold back on his opinions and this is no exception. He comes across meaning what he says. However, he does maintain some kayfabe in that he talks about wrestling as if it's a legitimate contest. He doesn't outright say it's all legit, but he doesn't break kayfabe either. Perhaps this is due to the book being written in an era where the business wasn't so open.

Bruno Sammartino: An Autobiography of Wrestling's Living Legend is not the best wrestling autobiography ever written, but then again, it had few standards to live up to for its time. That's not to say it's not worth reading - Bruno's stories are amazing to the point where you don't even need to be a wrestling fan to enjoy the book. It's one of the few wrestling books that would make an excellent movie as well.
