Bret "The Hitman" Hart is one of the biggest stars in the history of the wrestling business. He is also arguably one of the greatest wrestlers ever. One of twelve children of wrestler/promoter Stu Hart, he made his way from his father's promotion Stampede Wrestling all the way to top of the World Wrestling Federation. His relationship with the WWF ended with a bang in a rare double-cross that happened right infront of the viewing audience's eyes. There were many bumps and bruises inbetween, and even more afterward. Hitman: My Real Life in the Cartoon World of Wrestling is the much-anticipated telling of Bret's journey through his storied career.

Hart wrote the book over eight years, based off of audio diaries that he kept during his career. Because of this, he can write the precise thoughts he had at the time of the events. Coming in at nearly 600 pages, Hitman is by far the longest wrestling autobiography ever written. He addresses his family, drinking, drugs, affairs and life on the road and pulls no punches while doing so. You will not find a more honest wrestling autobiography. Bret writes in depth about every subject imaginable and leaves no stone left unturned. Bret presents his entire story from his point of view and how the reader judges him is not as important as getting his true story - both the good and bad - across.

There have been some great wrestling books written in the past ten years and Hitman: My Real Life in the Cartoon World of Wrestling ranks at the very top of that list. It's got triumph as such as when he won the WWF Championship, which he looks at as recognition of his talents rather than a prop given to an actor. It's got tragedy - the Hart family has seen more than its fair share of heartbreak, most notably Owen's tragic fall. It's got infidelity, which Bret gives his reasons for in the book. It's also got humour - not the same kind of humour as you'll find in a book by Mick Foley or Chris Jericho, but Bret isn't all serious all the time. All of these ingredients and many more are what make this book well worth the wait and a centerpiece for any wrestling book collection.

Since 1982, Dave Meltzer has published the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, which earned the nickname "dirt sheet" in the 80s for giving away many insider secrets. While it may have been shunned publicly, the Observer was the only way to keep up with the business - even for those on the inside. Besides providing access to the latest inside news, Dave is more than just "The National Enquirer of wrestling," he is also an excellent writer who is extremely passionate about the wrestling business and researches his topics thoroughly.

Tributes II takes over where the original Tributes installment leaves off. The book covers the life stories of Lou Thesz, Wahoo McDaniel, Miss Elizabeth, Freddie Blassie, Road Warrior Hawk, Andre the Giant, Curt Hennig, Johnny Valentine, Davey Boy Smith, Terry Gordy, Owen Hart, Stu Hart, Gorilla Monsoon, The Sheik and Tim Woods. The Andre and Owen biographies are expanded from the first book. It is a collection of some of the best Observer articles of the past several years in a hardcover, full-color format that is 239 pages. Included with the book is a DVD interview with Meltzer where he talks about each of the wrestlers featured in the book and also discusses why there is a problem with early deaths in the wrestling industry. It is an excellent companion piece to the book.

Tributes II is a must-read for any Observer reader or anyone who wants the learn the full stories about these wrestler's careers. All of the biographies in the book are tributes to wrestlers who have passed on, but the stories are about their lives and not their deaths (with the exception of Owen Hart). If you are not a long-time Observer subscriber and you chose to buy these issues separately, it would cost you $60. With Tributes II, not only does the book cost a fraction of that price, but also you get all of these great stories in one place with excellent presentation. Tributes II is a valuable piece to any wrestling book collection.

Anyone who knows about Stampede Wrestling and the Calgary wrestling scene can name many, many names of wrestlers who came out of there. Some of the big ones are Bret Hart, Owen Hart, Dynamite Kid, Davey Boy Smith, Chris Benoit, Bad News Allen, Jushin Liger and Brian Pillman. Those are just a few of the great wrestlers who passed through Calgary in its heyday.

Pain and Passion is the most comprehensive record about the territory available. It details the various personalities which passed through the territory (many of which are mentioned above) as well as the conditions in which they worked in Calgary. It also covers the history of the dysfunctional Hart family in-depth, such as how Stu got into wrestling, family feuds, legal issues, drug abuse and more.

In Pain and Passion, Heath McCoy has written one of the best books on wrestling today and likely the best documenting a single territory. It is a can't miss for anyone who is interested in learning about this promotion, whether you have some pre-existing knowledge or none at all. If you cared enough to read this review, do yourself a favour and pick this one up.
