March 2, 2010: Drawing Heat Re-Released by Crowbar Press

Drawing Heat, which celebrates the Ontario wrestling scene of the early 1980s was first published in 1988. It has just been re-released in a new, improved version from Crowbar Press (which has published such books as J.J. Dillon's autobiography).

"I think it evoked what wrestling was all about, at some crucial period of time. And everybody that is my age, or maybe a little bit younger, or certainly older, remembers that as the golden age of wrestling. Its roots are there, I think. That what I had always figured," Freedman told SLAM! Wrestling.

There were a few wrestling books that were out of print that I felt needed to be re-released due to their importance," said Teal. "Drawing Heat was the one that first came to mind, so I thought it would be interesting to contact Jim Freedman, the author, to see if he would be interested. He was wholeheartedly behind the project. I also wanted to interview Jim to get his take on the process of writing the book, what kind of a reaction the book received (from both fans and wrestlers), and his reaction to the death of Dave McKigney."

This new release of Drawing Heat includes several new photos and features two additions:

* An interview with the author Jim Freedman from 2009.

* "The Final, Fateful Bearman Tour," the story about the final days and tragic death of Bearman McKigney, Adrian Adonis and Pat Kelly in July 1988. It includes interviews with several wrestlers who were on the tour at the time such as Phil Watson (the son of Whipper Watson), Hartford Love, Willie "Wolfman" Farkus, Rocky Della Serra, Ricky Johnson, Steve Ocean, and Sweet Daddy Siki.

Jim Ross recently posted a blog regarding wrestling books:

"We've been getting a good deal of emails on wrestling related books to read. I am a major proponent of reading all one can about the business and from a variety of vantage points and philosophies. For example, a friend who attended the Jack Brisco funeral services last week told me that he was reading Howard Brody's book entitled "Swimming with Piranhas" and was really enjoying it. I have the book but haven't started it yet but I will be getting to it sooner than later. If anyone out there has read Howard's book and wants to send us a book review, please feel free to do so.

Also, I suggest checking out the many books by Larry Matysik who was the voice of St. Louis Wrestling back in the heyday and promoter Sam Muchnick's right hand man. Larry's perspective on the business is more that of an educated and objective fan and not that of a disgruntled ex-wrestler who rants about how they were done wrong, got the shaft, and generally bemoans, "woe is me." Larry is objective, honest and always provides a great read.

I think that every young wrestler should be reading all that they can about the business and in organized settings they should be tested on such."

Mick Foley has blogged about his newest book, Countdown to Lockdown, on his Foley Files blog on TNA's website:

"I can now say that I have completed the writing for Countdown to Lockdown, after spending twenty hours or so on the book's Afterword, where I take a look back and try to figure out what it all meant. I wanted the book to have a perfect finish, and therefore spent a great deal of time editing and rewriting, wanting to make sure I got it just right. I think i did, thanks in great part to my friend Jill Thompson, the talented young lady who illustrated two of my children's books, and really knows her wrestling and writing, in addition to being the creator of "The Scary Godmother" series of children's books, which have been turned into perennial Halloween favorites on the cartoon channel. Sometimes, the toughest thing a writer can di is accept that more is not always better, but I have no doubt that trimming a few hundreds words, and tweaking (one of my favorite words) the rest of the chapter has left me with a conclusion that I am really proud of. I know there are people out there who really feel like one, two, or three memoirs were enough for them. If they feel that way, than it's probably true...for them. But for people who enjoyed the last book, or who are open to the idea that this crazy wrestling business can provide inspiration for countless stories - I do believe you will enjoy this one. Wow, that was a horribly constructed sentence! Don't worry, the book is much better written than that."

Vince Russo appeared on the Monday Night Mayhem radio show to discuss his new book, Rope Opera: How WCW Killed Vince Russo:

Second host asks about the book - is there anything that they cannot get into on air. Russo says no and that he's up for anything. Host asks about "Bash At The Beach 2000" and says Russo revealed that Hogan/Bischoff were in on everything except Jeff Jarrett - Russo had to work Jeff Jarrett. Host says that Russo never followed-up on calling Hogan and asks Russo to follow-up on it. Russo says there really isn't enough time to go over everything because it's a long story but he can say that if they want some insight, news, scoop that he has never spoken of before. Before January 4, 2010 - he, Eric, Hulk had to sit down. He said he had spoken to Eric on a few occasions before January 4 came and it was going okay, smooth, cool, but he knew he had to have a face-to-face with Hulk before January 4 as it was something he wanted very very much. He wasn't running from it and he looked forward to it because 10 years after the fact, so much was said, reported, spoken about. He said Bash At The Beach was the last time he ever saw and had contact with Hulk outside of lawyer depositions. He was looking forward to meeting Hulk Hogan; when he sat with Hulk and Bischoff in a room in Tampa, he was able to get his side of the story out and hear their side of the story for the first time in 10 years.

December 1, 2009: WWE Comic Book Series To Launch in 2010

Titan Publishing has announced its partnership with World Wrestling Entertainment in the launch of WWE Comics. Over the course of the agreement, 20 issues will be produced and distributed to comic retailers and specialty stores in the US and Canada. The comic’s flagship title will be WWE Heroes featuring WWE Superstars and Divas, with the first issue debuting on March 23, 2010.

The series will take the biggest WWE Superstars and Divas beyond the spotlight of the squared circle and into a brand new fictional universe.

“Each week more than 1.6 million teens watch WWE programming on television in the U.S. This is an important demographic for the comic book industry and vital for a successful launch in the industry,”
stated Ned Hartley, Editor, WWE Heroes. “We’ve got some truly amazing stories to tell – our first issue is going to blow you away! The “in- your-face, no-holds-barred” attitude of the WWE works so well as a comic, we just can’t wait for people to see the great surprises that we’ve got in store.”

WWE Heroes series features Superstars Triple H, Undertaker, Randy Orton, Batista, Shawn Michaels, Big Show, John Cena, CM Punk, Kane, Edge, Chris Jericho, Matt Hardy, Rowdy Roddy Piper, Carlito, Jim Ross, Jerry Lawler and Kelly Kelly. The WWE Heroes cycle is written by Keith Champagne, who has penned acclaimed comics such as Justice Society of America, Green Lantern Corps, World War III and Adolescent Radioactive Black Belt Hamsters.

Issue #1 reveals an eternal rivalry set against the backdrop of the history of WWE. Why is the ruthless Shadow King so obsessed with WWE? What is the reason for his eternal and supernatural war with the Firstborn? And could his ancient opponent really be a member of the WWE roster?

Artwork is provided by comics’ artist, Andy Smith, who has worked as a penciller for major comic publishers such as Marvel, DC, Image, Acclaim, and CrossGen Entertainment.

An alternate cover exclusive to comic stores of issue #1 features a specially-commissioned cover by comics’ artist Liam Sharp, who has worked on titles including Hulk, X-Men, Spider Man, Venom, Gears of War, Superman, Batman, and Spawn: The Dark Ages.

The comedian Andy Kaufman pioneered a bizarre way to meet women: he would wrestle them. “He was shy around girls,” said Bob Zmuda, who was Kaufman’s longtime friend and writer. “He realized when you wrestle a woman, you break down all the physical barriers immediately.”

In 1979, Kaufman famously wrestled a woman on “Saturday Night Live” and won. In a mock-misogynistic rant after the match, he insulted the intelligence of women and challenged female viewers to a wrestling match. Any woman who beat him would win $1,000, and Kaufman would shave his head. The hundreds of responses to his taunts have been collected in a new book, Dear Andy Kaufman I Hate Your Guts (Process Media).

Comprised of letters and Polaroids, and sent from everyone from Midwestern housewives to an 11 year-old girl, the responses demonstrate the range of emotions elicited by Kaufman’s provoking style of comedy. One woman, Sheryll “Brickhouse” Holzapfel, addresses the comedian as “Dear Turkey Kaufman” and writes that when her male co-workers at the shipyard where she works “get fresh” she hits them “with my fifty-pound tool box.” “Mrs. Donna (The Bruiser)” from Hibbing, Minn., calls Kaufman a “scrawny little stick man” and says she can “whip you in nothing flat.” Yet another woman sent a headshot and a cheesecake picture of herself standing beside a convertible in a bikini.

Kaufman welcomed the mail, be it fan or hate. “He loved real reactions,” Zmuda said. “That animosity was theater to him.” According to Zmuda, Kaufman used the wrestling stunt as a kind of dating service; he’d ask for a picture, and if someone was attractive, he’d write a letter explaining he didn’t hate women. Kaufman also took the wrestling schtick to college campuses. Zmuda, who acted as the referee, recalled: “You’d have anywhere between 20 to 25 girls go on stage and the crowd would vote on who they wanted Andy to wrestle. Nine times out of 10 the same thing happened. We’d get it down to the last two girls. One would be the biggest, ugliest girl who could possibly beat him. The other would be a sexy knockout that all the guys wanted to see Andy wrestle.”

Zmuda said Kaufman’s fascination with wrestling dated to his Long Island childhood, when his family took him to see matches at Madison Square Garden. “It was always in his head, the wrestling,” Zmuda said. “If you were in a Hollywood diner and there was Marlon Brando in one corner and Haystacks Calhoun in the other, Andy would go, ‘It’s Haystacks.’”

TNA's Mick Foley revealed the name of his new upcoming book in a new blog on his MySpace.

"As some of you know, I will have a new book coming out in early fall 2010, titled Countdown to Lockdown. The book is largely finished – I just have to write two last chapters in the next few weeks.

"I'm a pretty tough judge of my own work, but I am very happy with it, and believe that anyone who has enjoyed any of my earlier books, will enjoy this one as well. I will occasionally be posting sneak peaks at the book on my new TNA blog, in addition to some chapters that won’t be available in the book."

Bobby "The Brain" Heenan started out as a manager back in 1965. From there, he went on to manage many of the greats in the AWA, followed by his WWF years, before transitioning into a role as a colour commentator - or "broadcast journalist" - and eventually winding up in WCW until 2000 when he was thrown off the already sinking ship.

As you can expect, Bobby The Brain: Wrestling's Bad Boy Tells All is full of humour which is usually directed at some ham-n-egger or humanoid and almost never self-deprecating. Heenan doesn't write a lot about his pre-wrestling days. He doesn't skip over them, but he tells enough to get by. Infact, very little is covered in detail. All of a sudden you realize a couple pages ago, he was in the '60s and now he's almost in the '80s. His WWF managerial career is largely written about by the Wrestlemania - one paragraph per year. Heenan obviously did not keep a journal of any kind - few in the wrestling business did. That said, he does cover most of the bases. If he didn't include an event in his book, it must not have been significant to him.

Bobby The Brain: Wrestling's Bad Boy Tells All may not be the War and Peace of wrestling books, but it is a quick and fun read. Bobby has plenty of great Andre the Giant stories, funny midget stories, lots of ribs and much more. It also includes a rare foreword by Hulk Hogan. The majority of the book is very light in tone with a heart-warming story near the end, followed by Bobby Heenan getting the news of his cancer diagnosis (which he is still fighting at the time of this writing). Bobby The Brain: Wrestling's Bad Boy Tells All may not be a must-read for all wrestling fans, but if you're looking for an easy read, you won't be disappointed in reading it.
